Is it true that people in the west (especially the USA) are thought to be very "self absorbed" ?

personally, that's not my dream, but it seems as though everybody expects that to be my dream, which really pisses me off. My parents, and siblings try and pressure me into getting married, and starting a family, and spending all of my hard earned money on that crap, because the procreating machine called life has that as one of it's unspoken rules.
